Kit 85-5959
The decals turned into a mess, I have 4 of these kits and all three of
the ones I have in my workshop had decals that were failing,
breaking in
pieces. I tried overcoating with decal film but the decals were just
stuck on the paper of flaked off. So I made new ones based
on the old
sheet and went on with it. I sanded down the main wheels to flatten
them some and was going to leave it at that as the stance was
a little
tail low, but while I was weathering the exhaust and doing a few other
things I managed to whack the nose wheel and break off
the pin on the
bottom, so I drilled it out for an .032 wire and added some machined
down sprue to lengthen the piston on the strut, and
then I straightened
up the scissors so they would reach. I attached the rudder off center,
and turned the nose wheel to match, though I
suspect the nose wheel
was free turning and not steerable with the rudder. I have some
silvering on the crosses, and I may be through
using decals for the
white only crosses, it would seem they ought to be not too hard to paint
instead. The Terry Dean weights would have
been enough by
themselves, there is quite a lot of weight on the nose wheel as another 1/2 ounce was placed under the radar operator's seat.
