Pavla
1/72 Vultee BT-13
Back view of the
engine showing the plastic ring I added. The BT cowl had a rather
large radius which Pavla failed to capture, and I didn't fix that. See
the picture of L285 in flight to see that.
Also, the cowl area aft of the cowl and forward of the section
in front of the windscreen tapered to a smaller radius at
the dishpan area than the kit does, the BT looks kind of clumsy at that
area
in side view and I think it is that way because the original design was for a geared R-1340 set farther back than the lighter R-985 or Wright R-975 that different versions of the Valiant used.
There was no provision made for attaching the cowl or engine to
the firewall that I could see. I attached the engine to the
cowl so the propeller had the correct clearance,
and then found a cylindrical scrap of plastic in the spares bin
that I attached to the back of the engine. I ground that down
until I had the proper cleance between the aft edge of the cowl and the
dishpan. The BT had a fairly big gap there and of course no cowl flaps.
